Hornworm Care Guide
Hornworms are a highly nutritious feeder insect, commonly used for reptiles, amphibians, and other insectivores. Proper care ensures they remain healthy, hydrated, and safe to feed.
Housing
- Keep hornworms in their original container whenever possible
- Ensure proper ventilation by slightly elevating the container—our Hornworm Container Lifts are ideal for improving airflow
- Keep clean and dry—remove waste or excess moisture if buildup occurs
- Keep the cup inverted with the food at the top, and periodically remove frass (waste) to maintain cleanliness
Temperature & Growth Control
Hornworm growth rate is directly affected by temperature:
- Cool (45–55°F): Slows growth significantly (ideal for extending lifespan)
- Moderate (60–70°F): Maintains steady growth
- Warm (75–85°F): Accelerates growth rapidly
⚠️ Avoid temperatures above 90°F or below 45°F
Feeding
- Hornworms feed on the prepared diet included in the cup
- No additional food is required while food supply lasts
- If food runs out, provide fresh hornworm chow (never use wild plants unless confirmed safe)
Hydration
- Hornworms get moisture from their food
- Do not mist or add water—this can cause mold and bacterial growth
Feeding to Pets
- Feed appropriate sizes based on your animal’s needs
- Hornworms are soft-bodied and high in moisture, making them excellent for hydration
- Use as part of a balanced diet Treats—not the sole feeder insect
Important Notes
- Hornworms may develop a blue/green tint due to their diet—this is normal
- Do not feed hornworms that appear black, liquefied, or foul-smelling
- Always wash hands after handling
