Chameleon Care Done Right: What Most Keepers Get Wrong (And How to Fix It)
Chameleons are one of the most captivating reptiles in the hobby—between their color changes, independent eyes, and slow, calculated movements, it’s easy to see why so many people want one.
But here’s the reality:
chameleons are not beginner reptiles, and a lot of the information out there either oversimplifies their care—or gets it completely wrong.
At Lace Canopy Exotics, chameleons aren’t just something we keep…they’re a major part of what we do. From Panthers to Parsons, we’ve built our setups and feeding programs around what actually works—not what sounds good on paper.
🌿 The Biggest Mistake: Treating Them Like Other Reptiles
Chameleons are arboreal, sensitive, and highly dependent on their environment.
What works for a gecko or a bearded dragon will absolutely fail with a chameleon.
Common mistakes we see:
- Glass tanks with no airflow (Please note glass tanks work just need the chimney effect)
- Overhandling (they are not social animals, well most are not I have a couple that would rather be on my head all day)
- Poor hydration methods
- Feeding low-quality insects
- No real supplementation plan
If you fix nothing else—fix the environment and feeding first.
🌳 Enclosure Matters More Than You Think
Chameleons need height, airflow, and structure.
Your enclosure should include:
- Screen or hybrid setup for proper ventilation (here in Colorado I keep them in PVC enclosures due to the low humidity, but I do have good ventilation. Checkout my setups and let me know if you have any questions)
- Plenty of horizontal climbing space
- Dense foliage (live plants only)
- Basking spot and UVB across the top
Stagnant air = respiratory issues.
Open airflow = healthier chameleon.
💧 Hydration Is Everything
Chameleons don’t drink from bowls. Let that sink in.
They rely on:
- Drip systems
- Misting (manual or automatic)
- Water droplets on leaves
Dehydration is one of the fastest ways to lose a chameleon.
If you’re not seeing regular drinking behavior, something needs to change.
🐛 Feeding Chameleons the Right Way
This is where most people fall short.
Feeding your chameleon random, low-quality insects is like trying to fuel a high-performance engine with cheap gas—you’ll get problems.
Here’s what we recommend:
🐛 Silkworms
Top-tier feeder. High in calcium, soft-bodied, easy to digest. Ideal for chameleons.
🪳 Dubia Roaches
Great protein source. Use as a staple, but always rotate.
🐛 Hornworms
Perfect for hydration and getting picky eaters back on food. More of a treat
🦗 Banded Crickets
High activity = strong feeding response.
🪱 Black Soldier Fly Larvae
Natural calcium boost—great for balancing your feeding program.
👉 The key: VARIETY + QUALITY + GUT LOADING
☀️ Lighting & Heat: Non-Negotiable
You can’t cut corners here.
Chameleons require:
- Proper UVB lighting (not optional) I only use Arcadia 6% and only recommend it.
- Correct basking temps (species-specific)
- A natural day/night cycle
Without proper UVB, you’re risking:
- Metabolic bone disease
- Weak structure
- Long-term health decline
⚖️ Supplementation: Balance Is Key
Too much or too little supplementation can both cause problems.
A solid routine typically includes:
- Calcium (regular use)
- Calcium with D3 (limited use)
- Multivitamin (scheduled use)
- I only use Rapashy Products and if you need recommendations please reach out very happy to help, so many options and opinions :)
This isn’t a “guessing game”—it should be structured based on your setup and feeders.
🧠 Real Talk: Chameleons Aren’t for Everyone
They’re not a “handle every day” reptile.
They don’t want attention. but some do or just to hangout on your head.
They don’t thrive in chaos.
But if you dial everything in?
You get one of the most rewarding reptiles you can keep.
